Born and raised in Hells Kitchen in NYC to Terri Augello and Craig Cook (her mother was white and her father was black).

Began singing at age 5, when she auditioned for the part of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz as a Kindergartener. With the support of her parents, she began learning classical piano at age 7. She listened to a wide variety of music while growing up from Beethoven to JayZ. This helped influence her unique sound later in life.

Began writing at age 14 (first song was “Butterflyz”)

She attended the Professional Performing Arts High School and graduated as valedictorian of her class. She was accepted to Columbia University, however, a different Columbia, Columbia Records offered her a record deal which would force her to leave college.

She left Columbia Records in 1998 and signed on with Arista Records. She recorded her first single “Fallin,” which got a huge boost in sales after she appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Due to the success of her singles, her first album, Songs in the Mirror, debuted at number one on the charts in June 2001. She won five Grammy Awards for this album. She also performed at the 2001 MTV Music Awards, and was nominated for the Image Award for Outstanding Performance in a Variety Series/Special.

Hew second album, released in 2003, Diary of Alicia Keys has also been a huge success.

She has also started a business with Krucial Brothers called Krucial Keys Enterprise to develop and produce music talent.

In 2004 she published a book entitled Tears for Water: Songbook of Poems and Lyrics.

She sang at the pregame show for Superbowl XXXIX in February 2005. She performed in July 2005 at Live8 and also recieved the Songwriters Hall of Fame Starlight Award in 2005, which honors gifted songwriters who are in the early years of their careers.

What's in Alicia Key's future? She will appear as the first guest on a revival of MTV's unplugged in September 2005. Then in October, she is releasing another album with some old songs from Diary and four new songs. She is also planning on writing a second book in the near future. She will appear on the big screen in 2006 as an actress in a movie entitled Film Composition of Black and White which will be produced by Halle Berry.
